How to Write Great Internet Advertising Part 1…
So… Who the Hell are you writing to?
If you’re talking to yourself, I hope you like your company
CUZ YOU’RE THE ONLY ONE LISTENING!!!
I mean, let’s get real for a minute
Unless you happen to be EF Hutton, people aren’t tuning in.
“So, Phil”…you ask (or maybe not, and I’m just talking to My-self) “Who am I writing to?”
The answer…I really don’t know, but you’d best get a good idea, and quick.
The formula is pretty simple. Know your audience.
If you’re selling Viagra you can be damned sure your prospect isn’t Mother Teresa…
For example, if you’re uptight, overdressed and generally ostentatious chances are you’re not reading my blog… I write this stuff for people who hate a blank page more than an empty plate… in fact I picture my best buddy Jared from High School. He’s middle aged, self driven, smart and has a cool life, a cooler wife, and a bunch of kids. Has common sense, uses it, and isn’t afraid to take chances or try new things.
…see what I’m getting at here? I can sit and have a conversation with him about anything, anytime. I know what to talk about and I don’t need to open Webster’s to feel intelligent. You need to get a clear picture of who you’re chatting with and then just sit and do it.
And don’t be that guy everyone hates who spends two hours talking about himself. Find out what’s going on in the other guy’s head (oh yeah, I’m a guy so I tend to, when I’m writing to my imaginary guy buddy, refer to him as a guy. Get it? If you don’t flog away, I still open car doors for my lady love and stand when she comes to the dinner table…if that’s sexist, get used to it!) and talk to him about that. If you’re selling anything, and we all are, it’s all about them. What THEY want, what THEY need, what THEY will happily dish out on a month-to-month basis forever
So if you’re selling Nair to your hairy aunt Lucy, sit her down in a chair and start the conversation…who knows, she might buy something…
