What’s More Important?

If you weren’t afraid of fear what would you do?”

Tony Blauer

What are the most important things in your life?  Seems like a crazy question to ask, coming from a marketing guy.  But considering the challenges faced by many companies in this economy it’s a pretty good one. Tony Blauer, one of the world’s leading authorities on fear, created the 3 P’s formula:

  • Personal: these are things that matter to You
  • Present: these are things that matter Now, not in the past or future.
  • Passionate: these are the things You Live For, and would be willing To Die For

So think about it…

If your life was on the line who or what would be going through your mind?  Your wife/husband?  Your kids?  Your dog/cat?  Your cappuccino?

Nope, I’m not kidding about that last one.  Tony once told the story of a cop who answered exactly that.  Tony figured the guy didn’t understand what the exercise is all about.  Turns out he did.  he described himself sitting on the porch of the cabin he had built for he and his wife.  His children had grown and had lives of their own.  To him the definition of happy was sitting on that porch with his wife watching the sunrise and sipping cappuccino.  He had a very clear vision of his life at retirement, and even though was in the future, he was willing to fight to the death for it today.

Isn’t this a bit heavy for a blog about marketing?  I don’t know, maybe?  But then again if you depend upon your business to put a roof over your head and food on your children’s plate, maybe not.

So take a minute.  List the three most important things in your life.  Write them on the back of a card and put them in your pocket.  So the next time things get hard can give yourself a quick reminder of at least three things that are more important than being afraid.  Who knows, that little reminder might save your business one day.  Hell, it might even save your life.

Never quit.
