The Power of Choice

‘Where shall I begin, please your Majesty’ he asked. ‘Begin at the beginning,’ the King said, gravely, ‘and go on till you come to the end then stop.’
Lewis Carroll

It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly blessed I am to live in North America.  I know it’s easy to rant about the ‘oh woe is me‘ economy these days, but that is really the level of thinking that created most of the problems in the first place.  Any time you catch yourself saying the words “I didn’t choose this“…take a breath.  The existential fact of the matter is that no matter what we have in our legal libraries there are two Universal Laws overseeing our world:

  1. Free Will
  2. Like Attracts Like

This really means that no matter how you may perceive of a situation, if you’re willing to peel the onion deep enough, you’ll find yourself staring back at you from the other end.  The way we think, ultimately, influences who we become.  If you don’t like where you are and want to find someone to blame, just look for the nearest mirror.  We are all products of our own choices, just like one of my favorite ‘Manifestation Models’ describes…

  • Sow a thought, reap an action
  • Sow an action, reap a habit
  • Sow a habit, reap a character
  • Sow a character, reap a destiny

Notice the through line…the sowing and the reaping are products we create, simply by beginning on a path of Our Choosing.  Even though we can disagree with the circumstances that we me find ourselves in, the reality is that how we choose to respond to those circumstances is entirely at our disposal.  This is one of the reasons I like Tony Robbins Problem Solving Questions so much.  Beginning with the idea that something is ‘Great‘ about a problem is one proactive place to begin.

It may be the human condition to pass blame and avoid responsibility but it can’t be denied that the simple acceptance of life as ‘it is’ can be extremely freeing, and often incredibly moving.

I often write about the concept of “Being Who You Are and Living The Truth“.  At it’s core this message is all about choices and the experience of life when you become aware of it and then take responsibility for it.  Awareness and Responsibility are the cornerstones of most great coaching programs; and for good reason.  Your ability to grow and ultimately to evolve usually pivots on the axis of accepting your purpose and embracing it, no matter what other people might think.  If you’re too concerned with outside acceptance, your ‘journey‘ is likely to be very short.  Likewise a journey made without the awareness of our global impact is equally doomed.

The key to lasting change from decisive choice comes from the acceptance of Your-Self without the injected prejudice of others, and then taking that power and reflecting it on others to help them liberate their own spirits.  Lots of 50cent words to simply say that when you understand the gift of who you are, be sure to pay it forward by celebrating the gifts you witness in others.

That’s true love in my humble opinion. ..Want to find it?  Be it.

Now Get Busy,

Phil

” The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them.”  Thomas Merton
