How to Get Rich by Not Competing

“You must get rid of the thought of competition. You are to create, not to compete for what is already created.
You do not have to take anything away from anyone.
You do not have to drive sharp bargains.
You do not have to cheat or to take advantage. You do not need to let anyone work for you for less than he earns.
You do not have to covet the property of others or to look at it with wishful eyes.
No one has anything of which you cannot have the like, and that without taking what he has away from him.
You are to become a creator, not a competitor.
You are going to get what you want, but in such a way that when you get it every other person whom you affect will have more than he has now.”

William Wattles, The Science of Getting Rich

Wattle’s book was emailed to me by a good friend a couple of years ago.  I’m not sure that he knew just how deeply the book was going to affect me, inside and out.  It might seem a bit ‘Woo Woo’ but all I can tell you is that since implementing the lessons in the book my personal results have been off the charts!

The simple idea that the world has ‘limited resources’ and that we need to somehow horde and protect…like market share…gets us looking at the cup as half empty, or worse, that the cup may be emptying as we speak.  Not exactly empowering.  But this kind of thinking is epidemic in many small businesses and a good reason why many of them never make it.

I recently watched a large marketing conference and the guy who organized it (Kern again…what can I tell you, the dude is good…) spent some time introducing everyone in the room who did what he did at a high level.  Some of them were presenting at the conference, while a good number were simply there to learn, just like me.  The cool thing is, from an outside view, every one of them could be viewed as a COMPETITOR.  They all sell similar products to similar audiences, in some cases the EXACT audiences.   So WTF?!?

You see they all ‘get it’, as do most of the clients I work with.  At the TOP everyone shares.  They realize that they only really ever compete with themselves and that by focusing on their own evolution and contribution they will create what only they can.  The people who try to copy you will always be just that, copies.  The original you will continue to become something better, something UNIQUE.  That’s what I’m committed to, and you should be too.

So here’s a worthy challenge.  Inspire yourself to create what is truly YOURS.  Develop it from your heart and make sure it solves a big problem people need solved.  It’s possible someone else will come up with a solution too, but that’s not important.  Just do it.  Chances are there will be a few critical differences between your ideas, and that uniqueness is what will set you apart.

In the end you can see the cup as half full or half empty…or as I like to see it, as one glass of the ocean…

The Universe is Unlimited…
