Do You Know Who You Are?
“Do you know what you are? You are what you is. You is what you am. A cow don’t make ham.”
Frank Zappa
Have you ever met someone, maybe at a ‘Business Opportunity‘ meeting who looked…perfect? I mean, he dressed right, looked right, walked right, talked right, smelled right but still you didn’t ‘buy‘ it. Most times we tee it up to the product or the timing. I want to peel the onion a little bit deeper…
Story number 2. Let’s pick the same scenario, but change the persona a bit. We’ll stay with the ‘Biz Op‘ since that’s likely why you’re here in the first place. But lets change our lead performer. This guy is not as slick, maybe not even that well dressed…but there’s something else, something that tells you…this guy is ‘for real‘.
Either of these stories sound familiar?
There are lots of different directions we could spin this story; “make sure you leave the rough edges so people believe you“…”never count out beginners luck“…blah blah blah. Let’s get to the core of things.
When you stand in front of your bathroom mirror, who do you see? I mean, WHO ARE YOU? When no one is looking and the world isn’t keeping score. Are you the ‘Corporate Executive‘ or ‘Easy Rider‘? There is no right or wrong answer unless the person you ‘put on’ is different from the one you really are.
Hmm… ‘Put On‘, didn’t mean to write that, but it’s stunningly appropriate. The ‘Put On‘ is likely the reason that Mr. Clothes Make The Man didn’t close the deal. It’s one thing to SAY all the right things on the outside, but when the inside is screaming “JUST GIVE ME YOUR MONEY!” our subconscious smells the BS from across the room.
So let me ask you something, it’s the same thing I asked myself a few years ago and it changed my life. “Are you living the Truth?” Not what someone tells you it is, not what society conditions you to believe but What YOU believe. Compromises are painful, I can tell you from experience. They often manifest physically, which really sucks…however they also go away when things become congruent.
Be Who You Are. Live The Truth.
I heard that in my head about 3 years ago and it shattered almost everything I ‘thought‘ I believed. In my heart I knew that what I saw in the mirror and what I felt in my heart were so different they were unrecognizable. The road back hasn’t been all roses mind you but I can tell you I wouldn’t trade a minute of it.
So look in the mirror and get really clear on what matters to you (If you haven’t already signed up…go through the Complete Coach course…it’s free, and the exercises will help) When you do that the next step toward being ‘the guy‘ who closes the deal is to get just as clear on what your market wants. Then just be YOU and talk to THEM….
The Universe will take care of the details…

Any ideas?

Totally feel what you’re saying in this post. I used to try and always look perfect not really because I was trying to deceive people but that’s what society told me a good businessman should look like. When I started just being me, the effects were phenomenal. I felt more comfortable, I made more money, business relationships got stronger… It was amazing.
Thanks Justin.
If I listened to ’society’ I’d be hiding under my bed
C’mon, you and I both know there’s no reason anyone should listen to either of us according to conventional wisdom…yet I’m guessing, like me, you have clients with a net worth 10x’s yours who pay you very well for your insight.
The truth is we’re all special, we all have OURSELVES to bring to the world, and the fact that we’re here at all is reason enough to me that we should.
Thanks again dude,
Phil
